“I was going in, but the elevator started going down and he said ‘Happy New Year and pushed me out”, says Sanchez. Stephen Hewett-Brown, a 25-year-old was in the lift when it stopped midway.
He pushed her out of the lift, but when he tried to escape, he, unfortunately got pinned between the elevator car and the shaft. It came down quickly, and crushed him.
Stephen was screaming for help while other 10 onlookers watched him helplessly. His final words to the fortunate lady when she escaped was ‘Happy New Year’. He then died instantly as the lift door kept opening and closing on him. “It’s crazy, but that’s just who he is — he would put himself in the line of fire to help another, that shows his character,” said an onlooker.
Investigators say the man was riding a packed elevator in an apartment building on the Lower East Side with his pregnant girlfriend, sister, and cousin when it malfunctioned.“He [Brown] was saying “I can’t breathe” and added that when Coronado tried to pull him up he said to leave him”. However, when paramedics finally arrived at the scene, they discovered Brown crushed between the elevator door and the floor.
The building situated in New York has attracted complaints about elevator service, according to city records.
131 Broome, part of a federal affordable housing program, has had 36 elevator complaints since 2009, according to Department of Building records. The most recent was on June 21, though the elevators were inspected as recently as September.
The building owners, Grand Street Guild East HDFC, were sued with two Environmental Control Board violations in August for failure to maintain the elevator in a code compliant manner.
Stephen was an aspiring musician who rapped and played the piano but he is a real hero who came to the rescue of the woman like an angel on New Year’s Eve. May his soul rest in peace.
