8 Ways To Resist Smoking

More than 5 million people die across the world every year due to consumption of tobacco in some form or the other, especially cigarettes or bidis and India accounts for nearly one-fifth of this huge number. Although, people are aware of the adverse effects of smoking, the number isn't reducing much due to the inability to control the urge for smoking in most of the cases.




But that should not be an excuse for anyone to continue smoking. In fact, one can overcome the urge to smoke by following these tips:

1. Distract yourself: Whenever you feel like smoking, tell yourself that you have to wait for 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, try to do something else instead of thinking that you want to smoke. Talk to your friends or make a call to someone to distract yourself. Try to repeat it more often.

2. Drink a glass of water. Drinking water is good for you and seems to have a calming effect on cigarette cravings for many people. Avoid drinks like coffee or alcohol that you may have associated with smoking in the past.

3. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT): For this you need to consult your doctor to help deal with cravings. The nicotine nasal spray and nicotine inhaler are available if they have been prescribed by doctors, while some types of NRT, including patches, gum and lozenges, are available over-the-counter. 

4. Consume healthy snacks: If you feel like smoking, take a break from your office or business and eat healthy snacks such as fruit salads and sandwiches. This will help you beat nicotine cravings and the urge to bring a cigarette into your mouth.

5. Wash your face or take a shower: Wash your face or go for a mild shower to feel fresh. It will also help in reducing stress and more or less have the same calming effect that most people attain from smoking.

6. Remind yourself of all the benefits: Whenever you feel that your urge to smoke is more than your resisting power, start listing adverse effects of smoking. Start thinking about all the benefits of boycotting the habit of smoking. You will feel better, healthier and proud once you resist the urge to smoke. 

7. Exercise and meditate: Researches show that smoking is associated with stress and depression. Therefore, deep-breathing exercises, yoga and meditation can help a lot to quit smoking.

8. Get support: There's always your friends and family ready to help you out.
